7 Tips for Eating Out without Packing on the Pounds

Eating out is not forbidden if you are trying to lose weight or lead a healthier iifestlyle. The benefits of enjoying a meal out with family and friends is important for our relationships, connections and our wellbeing.  Here are 7 of the top tips for staying on track while you are enjoying a night off of cooking.

1. Use smart portion control. Most restaurants serve way more than what we need or should be eating in one meal. To resist temptation of eating your entire plate and double the sugar, carbs or calories, ask for 1/2 your meal to be put in a carryout box when you order. Not only is the food off your plate so you don’t over eat, your next meal is already for you. Save $$ and keep off the lbs.

2. Order a starter or appetizer as your meal. Starters are usally smaller yet filling giving you a meal without worrying about what it will do to your hips.

3. Snack before you go. Have a healthy snack like veggies or a protein shake about 30 minutes before heading out. You won’t arrive with an empty stomach and order more because you are starved.

4. Skip the buffet! Yes I did say skip the buffet and the all-you-can-eat restaurants. Although we want to get the most out of our dinning out, these restaurants are usually only offering high-fat, high-caloric,  and low nutritional-value foods. The exception is a salad bar but you still need to be careful of what you are putting on your plate…. the pasta, rolls, cheese, and meats be high salt, calorie and add to your waistline without you even giving them a second thought.

5. Don’t skip a meal in anticipation of eating out later. This is a big no-no and will send your body into fat storage mode all day long.Be smart and eat your healthy meals and snacks so your body will have the energy and you will feel good all day and into the evening out.

6. Use smart substitutions. Most restaurants are glad to substitute french fries for steamed vegatables or a side salad. Ask for your salad dressing on the side as well or for balsamic vinegar and olive oil instead of the creamy high calorie ones.

7. Drink alcohol and wine smartly. Remember your wine, beer and alcoholic beverages can contain alot more sugars, fats and calories than you think. Stick to one with your dinner and enjoy your company – you will not only feel much better later, your head will thank you for it too!

Now go and enjoy that night out and make the smartest choices you can! Give your self a pat on the back when you do and notice how well you feel.
