Menopause and Metabolism

Why Your Body Keeps Changing (And How to Work With It)

Whether you’re in your 40s, somewhere in the middle of menopause, or already through it, the changes we’re talking about today affect all of us. And the sooner you understand what’s happening, the easier it is to work with your body instead of feeling like you’re constantly swimming upstream.

So let’s talk about it.

Last week, I found myself in my closet trying on three pairs of jeans that used to fit just fine. You know that moment—the one where you suddenly wonder, “What the heck happened to my body practically overnight?”

If you’re nodding along, welcome to the club nobody talks about out loud. The one where it feels like your body is doing its own thing no matter what you do.

Here’s what no one really tells us: in our 40s, 50s, and beyond, hormones don’t just quietly fade away. They shift. They change. And those changes affect everything—from how we store fat to how we manage stress, how hungry we feel, and how much energy we have.

I wish someone had told me sooner that these changes aren’t about your body failing you. They’re about your body adapting. Once you start to understand what’s really going on, things start to make sense.

What’s Really Happening?

Whether you’re starting to notice changes in your 40s, feeling deep in the middle of menopause in your 50s, or (like me) navigating post-menopause in your 60s, the pattern is the same.

As hormone levels shift—estrogen drops, progesterone lessens, and even testosterone changes—it throws off the balance your body’s used to. That can make your metabolism feel slower. You might notice:

  • More belly fat, even if your eating habits haven’t changed.
  • Energy crashes, especially in the afternoon.
  • Stronger cravings for carbs and sugar.
  • Sleep that’s harder to come by.
  • Stress that feels harder to manage—and it might even feel like it’s showing up on your waistline.

These changes are real. They’re common. And they’re not your fault.

This Isn’t Just “Aging”

What I’ve learned (and wish I’d known sooner) is that your body isn’t giving up on you. It’s adapting. It’s working differently now.

And while it’s easy to get frustrated, the truth is that understanding these changes is the first step to feeling better.

What Can You Do About It?

Instead of trying to fight your body and force it to act like it did in your 20s or 30s, (even early 40’s), you can start giving it what it needs now.

  • Eat differently: More protein, more fiber, and balanced carbs to support stable blood sugar.
  • Move differently: Strength training is more important than ever to help maintain muscle and keep your metabolism active.
  • Prioritize sleep: It’s not optional. Good sleep supports your hormones and metabolism.
  • Manage stress: Stress hormones directly impact how your body stores fat and how energized you feel.

I’ve learned this isn’t just about diet and exercise. It’s about understanding how your body works now—and learning to work with it.

Mindset Shift: It’s Not About “Fixing” Yourself

For years, I thought I just needed to push harder—eat less, work out more, try the next thing. But once I understood what my body was going through, I stopped fighting it.

When I stopped expecting my body at 63 to act like it did at 25 or 35, I found so much more peace—and better results.

I felt more stable. I had more energy. My clothes fit better. I stopped feeling stuck.

You’re Not Alone

I see this in so many women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. They’re not thriving because they found some magic fix. They’re thriving because they learned to listen to their bodies and respond to what it needs now.

They stopped judging themselves for normal changes. They figured out that understanding their bodies gave them back the power to make real choices that work.

And the best part? Many of them say they feel more confident, vibrant, and in tune with their bodies now than they did in their younger years.

So Where Do You Start?

Start paying attention to how your body feels—without judgment.

Notice what makes you feel energized or depleted. Which foods satisfy you and which ones leave you crashing. Which movements feel good and which leave you exhausted.

If you haven’t already, consider getting your hormones checked. And find a provider who understands women’s health at this stage. They are out there.

And above all—stop beating yourself up for these changes. They’re natural. They’re normal. And they’re not your fault.

Your body isn’t broken. It’s just speaking a new language. And once you learn how to listen, you’ll be amazed at how much better the conversation can go.

The best years of your life aren’t behind you. They might just be getting started.
