Is sitting at your desk making you fat? YES IT IS! And it may be killing you too.

What does sitting do to your health?

Research is clearly showing that prolonged sitting has repeatedly been shown to be an independent risk factor for chronic disease and early death (yes, death) and this is true even if you exercise regularly and are fit as a fiddle.

Whoa! did I say ‘exercise can’t undo the damage caused by hours of sitting everyday’? Yes, I did.

Scary facts showing up in research:

  • Sitting for long periods, day after day, can increase your risk for lung cancer by more 50 percent*. (Really, it’s more dangerous than 2nd hand smoke if you look at the studies.)
  • Sitting has been found to increase your risk of death from almost any health issue, including type 2 diabetes,  cardiovascular disease and cancer.
  • Plus, the less you exercise, the more pronounced the detrimental effects of sitting are.

IF YOU’RE NOT STANDING RIGHT NOW, GET ON UP ON THE FLOOR AND STAND WHILE YOU FINISH READING THIS BLOG.

Here’s the solution.

Get up and stand up as much as possible, everywhere you can. I stand at my kitchen counter all the time while working on blogs (I’m standing while I write this), work on recipes or talking on the phone. I am always pacing the room while on a conference call or webinar… I simply set the computer screen where I can see it clearly while standing.

There are also many options for a standing desk too. They are still a little pricy but worth the investment if your job has you sitting for 4 or more hours a day. If you do sit at work, be sure to get up regularly and stand, walk or just move a little in place. Dr. Mercola says to not sit longer than 50 minutes of every hour.

Get a fitness tracker or use a phone app. Fitness guru’s recommend aiming for 7,000 to 10,000 steps per day, in addition to your regular exercise routine. You can even walk in place if you can’t get out of the house or office. I do this quite often, while in the kitchen cooking dinner or while watching tv.

Getting out of your chair can bring you closer to a healthier lifestyle and it will help motivate you to do even more (and we can always use motivation can’t we?).
